Pufferfish Boss Guide — Carrot Bait, Terrain & Pufferfish Tail
How to beat Pufferfish in How to Fish using terrain, control its rolling pressure, and keep the Pufferfish Tail needed to progress.
Summoning Pufferfish
Complete the Tourist’s Endangered Creature request first. The reward is a Carrot, which is used as bait for Pufferfish.
Best tested tactic: use terrain
Video-tested: Pufferfish is unusually fast and becomes difficult to hit while rolling/flailing. Multiple players independently arrived at the same solution: trees, walls and corners are your best friend.
Rather than sprinting across open ground:
- Start near solid terrain with room to circle.
- Force Pufferfish to change direction around the object.
- Fire while it is pathing or recovering.
- Move again before it closes the gap.
An upgraded SMG works if recoil is controlled. Shotgun knockback also appeared useful in some attempts, but the videos do not establish a single mandatory weapon.
The biggest progression trap: Pufferfish Tail
After one multiplayer kill, the group could not progress with ordinary chunks. They later found a distinctive Pufferfish Tail and successfully returned it.
Do not cook, sell or gamble that Tail. Seagulls can also steal unattended drops, so secure it quickly.
Version note
Fast physics enemies are particularly sensitive to patches. Terrain behavior here is a launch-day observed tactic, not an official guaranteed exploit.
